چکیده

INTRODUCTION Polyploidy is an intriguing phenomenon in plants that has provided an important pathway for evolution and speciation. Although the first polyploid was discovered over a century ago, the genetic and evolutionary implications of polyploidy are still being elucidated (Bennett, 2004; Soltis et al., 2003). On a more practical level, there are many opportunities for utilizing polyploidy as a valuable tool in traditional plant breeding programs.

The polyploidy revolution then…and now: Stebbins revisited.

Polyploidy has long been considered a major force in plant evolution. G. Ledyard Stebbins, Jr., an architect of the Modern Synthesis, elegantly addressed a broad range of topics, from genes to chromosomes to deep phylogeny, but some of his most lasting insights came in the study of polyploidy. Here, we review the immense impact of his work on polyploidy over more than 60 years, from his entranc...

Polyploidy: recurrent formation and genome evolution.

Polyploidy has played a major role in the evolution of many eukaryotes. Recent studies have dramatically reshaped views of polyploid evolution, demonstrating that most polyploid species examined, both plant and animal, have formed recurrently from different populations of their progenitors. Populations of independent origin can subsequently come into contact and hybridize, generating new genoty...

CYTOTAXONOMIC STUDIES IN WEST HIMALAYAN BRYACEAE (MUSCI)

The meiotic chromosomes of 10 species (Pohlia elongata, Anomobryum cymbifolium, Brachymenium acuminatum, B. ochianum, B. sikkimense, Bryum cellulare, B. pseudotriquetrum, B. apiculatum, B. capillare and B. atrovirense), in four genera of the family Bryaceae of acrocarpous mosses are studied with special emphasis on their evolution, polyploidy and cytological features with reference to interrela...

The impact of polyploidy on grass genome evolution.

Polyploidy is an evolutionary process whereby two or more genomes are brought together into the same nucleus, usually by hybridization followed by chromosome doubling. As a result, the new polyploid is genetically isolated from its diploid progenitor(s) and a new species is formed. The importance of polyploidy was recognized early in the 20th century and for the past decades many studies have a...

Plant polyploidy and non-uniform effects on insect herbivores.

Genomic duplication through polyploidy has played a central role in generating the biodiversity of flowering plants. Nonetheless, how polyploidy shapes species interactions or the ecological dynamics of communities remains largely unknown. Here we provide evidence from a 4 year study demonstrating that the evolution of polyploidy has reshaped the interactions between a widespread plant and thre...
